VIRACEPT CHOSEN AS PREFFERED PI FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

Thank you for having the firesight to start this thread on the next "Amgen".

From RS@C (10/20/97):

" Viracept chosen as preffered Protease Inhibitor for young children. On September 30, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a draft of "Guidelines for the use of Antiretroviral Agents in Pediatric Infection". Specifically the document states, "Based on the theoretical advantage indicated by different genetic resistance mutation patterns from other protease inhibitors as well as palatability, nelfinavir (Viracept) is generally recommended as first line therapy for young children." Combination therapy, including one highly active protease inhibitor plus two NNRTIs, is recommended as the preffered regimen. Unlike all other protease inhibitors, Viracept is available in a powder formulation, while Abbott's Norvir is available in liquid and is suggested as an alternative protease inhibitor. Crixivan and Invirase are not approved for use in children, although Crixivan is recommended as a second line agent for use in older children who can swallow tablets or capsules."

IMHO, even an old fox would have a hard time refuting HHS, but then again even Dr. Ho has been refuted here. The Department of health and Human services clearly endorses the best treatment for children and IMO for adults also. Anybody that has diabetes should seek treatment vice dying waiting for a miracle, fox?
