Role in presidential election of 2008

In the summer of 2007, Powell donated the maximum to John McCain's campaign.[40] In the beginning of 2008, Powell's name was mentioned as a possible running mate of Republican nominee John McCain for the 2008 U.S. presidential election.[41] However, some had speculated that Powell would ultimately endorse Barack Obama.[42] On August 13, 2008, Fox News analyst Bill Kristol stated that Powell will endorse Barack Obama for president and may give a speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.[43][44] Powell said in response that "I do not have time to waste on Bill Kristol's musings."[43] Powell told CNN News in February 2008 that "I will vote for the candidate I think can do the best job in America—whether that candidate is a Republican or Democrat or an independent."[43]

On October 19, 2008, Powell announced his endorsement of Obama during an interview with Meet the Press, citing "his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities", in addition to his "style and substance." Powell additionally called Obama a "transformational figure."[45][46] He was also "troubled" by the "false intimations that Obama was Muslim." Powell stated that "[Obama] is a Christian - He's always been a Christian...," and continued, "But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America." Powell later stated, "Over the last seven weeks, the approach of the Republican Party has become narrower and narrower [...] I look at these kind of approaches to the campaign, and they trouble me."
