The big threat to the economy now comes from main street problems, like a prolonged fall in consumption precipitated by much tighter credit and a collapse in perceived wealth, coupled with rising long rates caused by gigantic deficits, as the economy struggles to find its footing. It may look like the early eighties or worse.
