Taxes and royalties on oil production isn't socialism. AK gets a lot from oil and has a small population, but it also has unique problems. Consider roads. The population may be small but the distances and weather problems are formidable. Another unique factor is that so much of the state is controlled by the federal government. The 3 major oil companies there constitute a challenge which Palin overcame in bidding, negotiating and awarding a pipeline contract to a Canadian company - in as much as the oil companies with the No Slope contracts wanted to control the pipeline too.
