I heard Biden's comment and don't know why it was considered a gaffe except to the extent that McCain could jump on it to move the focus away from the economy. But that only takes McCain back to the shrill "But he's not experienced and ready!" line which goes nowhere, as we saw before.

Obama's lead widens in 2 of Gallup's 3 models and holds steady in the third.

Every day that peels off the calendar without McCain moving back up gets bigger and bigger.

Rambi,

I haven't found where the whole statement with context was talked about. I did find this positive take on msnbc

firstread.msnbc.msn.com

It sounds like McCain is trying to make an issue out of nothing. Our enemies will try to test McCain. The test may be very different. With McCain, I would guess someone would be trying to get him to overreact, sort of the way that Bush overreacted by going into Iraq.

Why was it considered a huge gaffe?

First of all, the timing. Everything was going Obama's way. He was riding on the Powell endorsement. Then Biden changes the subject to the risk of some test because of Obama's inexperience. The McCain campaign would have paid money for such a change of subject.

Then there's the risk, itself. The comparison is to Kennedy, a youthful president who was tested early in his term. We had the Cuban missile crisis, Bay of Pigs, scary stuff. For those who are old enough to remember, folks were scared to death. Older voters sitting on the fence will make that association.

In a subsequent statement, Biden said that it was OK because experienced Biden was there to back up the kid. Not in so many words, of course, but again he's playing into the hands of those who want the message out there that Obama doesn't have the experience. Here's Biden confirming that.
