Darlene, Depending on where you are in Sac., it takes about 1 1\4 hours to get to Grass Valley. Less if you drive fast. Then it takes about 1 + hours to get to the mine. It's about 40 miles but they aren't the easiest miles. The roads are 2 lanes, narrow and old. Winter is the rain and snow season in Alleghany. It snows a lot, too.

Grass Valley to Downieville about 50 miles
Grass Valley to the mine about 40 miles
Downieville to mine about 15 miles up mountain

Grass Valley is on Route 49 (get it 49ers). You take I-80 to Auburn, north on 49 for 25 miles. 50 goes to Placerville.

With El Nino coming there could be a lot of closures.
