That's probably because Obama is a more consistent liberal than McCain is a consistent conservative. McCain has annoyed, even angered many conservatives with some of his past ideas, votes, etc. in particular, but hardly limited to McCain-Finegold.

Well its only partially because of that, for example Obama is a smoother speaker, and then there is the excitement about having a non-white president for the first time, also there is probably a little bit of "line up behind the winner" going on since its starting to look like Obama is going to win, and there are other reasons, but the first reason I gave is a very important one.
