It was clear symbolism -- the point was that if the American people truly had to sacrifice for the Iraq War, public opinion on the war would change on a dime.

This is a stupid remark.

First, public opinion on the war could hardly be worse. The American people, for the most part, have no idea why we're there or believe it is for the wrong reasons -- due to Bush's inability to articulate the rationale, which is clear to those who have bothered to look at the issue on their own.

More importantly, people HAVE had to sacrifice. Every day I run into parents or relatives of people who have kids there. Almost every single day.

The people who are serving in Iraq are those who want to do so -- mostly, because they have the good sense to realize what is at stake.

It may be symbolism, but it's a matter of record democrats introduced a bill to reinstate the draft.

If I was the opposition candidate running against one of them, it would be one of my best campaign commercials.

Like Rangel dodging taxes, Franken dodging taxes, Dodd receiving the most money from the money lender he was overseeing, etc...

You could say the exact same thing about the following:

- Universal health care
- Global warming
- Federal deficit

Don't tax me, tax the guy behind the tree ...
