If we prove to be in an economic depression the next President will rely on government spending to maintain employment in the economy. I would prefer a quick collapse with a very high unemployment rate, but I'm not going to get that with either candidate.

John McCain has proposed a $15 trillion program to buy the mortgages of home owners who find their payments too expensive and use government debt to reduce their payments and/or loan balance. McCain's plan will nearly triple governmental debt.

Barrack Obama has proposed spending a lesser amount of money on infrastructure projects, such as the electrical grid, using governmental debt.

Between the two:

McCain's plan is a massive welfare program without benefit to the taxpayer, and will provide a very limited rise in GDP;

Obama's plan is a massive public works program enhancing the productivity of the US economy, and will provide a substantial rise in GDP, provided we have seriously rising unemployment.
