Tinklenberg Campaign Brings in More Cash, Riding Bachmann Backlash

WASHINGTON -- You'd think most Americans wouldn't pay attention to a political race in Minnesota's 6th district. But since Friday night's MSNBC's Harball, where Republican incumbent Michele Bachmann said that Barack Obama may have anti-American views, more than 23,000 Americans donated to her Democratic rival Elwyn Tinklenberg.

"This time it has just simply gone too far," he said. "That's why we're getting the support we're getting."

Tinklenberg has pulled in $1.3 million from donors in every state, and is now matched up with the first-term Congresswoman's remaining campaign funds.

Wednesday, the Tinklenberg campaign says that more than 3,000 contributions were from Minnesota, more than 2,400 were from California, over 1,100 were from New York, and more than 2,300 were from Texas. The average donation was $50, the campaign said.

In the interview, Bachmann told host Christ Matthews that she was concerned that Obama "may have anti-American views." She also called on the media to do an expose on whether members of Congress have pro- or anti-American views.

Her comments drew condemnation from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who said the comment “dishonors the position (Bachmann) holds and discredits her as a person.”

Bachmann told the media she regrets doing the interview and using the phrase "anti-American." She also says it was not her wording. Clarifying the statement, she said the Democratic presidential nominee's views are "concerning" and deserve more media attention.

Another Republican, St. John's University professor Aubrey Immelman, is joining the 6th district race as a write-in opponent.
