OK, let's include FICA:

A married person who has earned a taxable income of $42,000 pays $3,892 in federal income tax plus $2,604 in social security, for a total of $6,496.

On the other hand, a person who has earned a taxable income of $500,000 pays $144,969 in federal income tax plus $6,324 in social security, for a total of $151,293 (which is $144,797 more in tax than the guy who makes $42K).

The guy who earns 12 times the income pays 23 times the tax and gets fewer govt services. Is that fair?
