Definitely two different ways to frame it.

I think Alter has the better of the argument here.

The problem with Alter's conclusion is that he has no anchor. Yes, we've moved left. But where that leaves us on the continuum, who knows. He doesn't tell us by what standard he declares us center-center. Are we center-center, or merely somewhat less center-right? He simply holds up his thumb to gauge it based on some internal framework, seems to me.

Usually in these areas we count people as whatever they say they are. If someone says he's a Baptist or an atheist, we may have doubts but we let people define themselves because there's really no alternative.
