They voted for it, Hugh, because Medicare part D was a populist ploy similar to many populist ploys that can easily garner votes but cost a TON in the long run. Avoiding these populist ploys is one sign of ACTUAL LEADERSHIP among elected officials.

Obama has already shown he has the maturity to avoid populist ploys when he wouldn't support that gasoline tax holiday (although that one was far less clear as a scam vs medicare part D, you could have actually supported it in good conscience)- however Obama did stand up to it showing he CAN stand up to these populist scams.

Congresspeople can never do it UNLESS they are the speaker or the majority leader. You need to be a strong voice to stand up against populism, not a pee on.

The republican byline of "why'd democrats vote for the war, medicare part D, pork laden budgets" etc is wearing pretty thin. Voters understand it is the LEADERS who need to lead here. FOllowers are given a pass.
