This is a silly argument for obvious reasons...prevention works...not on everyone, but it does work. Yes, prevention works some. But it isn't as though preventive care can eliminate all or most acute problems. It cannot and nobody in the medical community believes it can. State Medicaid programs have, for years, offered EPSDT screenings at no cost to families. Yet, these benefits go unused by my beneficiaries. Many, due to a total lack of concern. Some, because they don't want to bother with the government red tape. It is commonplace for Medicaid patients to refuse treatment when told they must qualify for benefits BEFORE seeing the doctor. They won't even bother to visit their Medicaid office to receive free health care. Too much hassle. I see this every day. Docs who see the patient BEFORE getting proof of eligibility will never be paid for their services. Ever. Perhaps the most exciting product we provide for clinics today is real time eligibility systems, where they can verify benefits BEFORE the patient is seen, without a 30-60 minute wait on the phone.
