Have you read the book "The Black Swan"; it discusses the probabilities of a Market Collapse. Evidently no one believed in the existence of a black swan until they were found in the antipodes.

We the people have plenty of good choices to vote for in politicians, but perfer bad ones much too often. Nixon/McGovern is the best example I know of. McGovern was brillant, fearless and decent. He would have made a great president. People voted Nixon over McGovern in 49 of 50 states. A blind person could see McGovern was much the better man. Blame the people, not the politicians. Both Kerry and Gore would have made much better presidents than bush!!
