I dont think the past pattern can help much - I tried that route - it is largely a confluence of several factors : market sentiment (the most important), valuation, sector outlook at that time ...

take WLA - it tanked last Q after good earnings, bet you this Q it will do much better.

JBIL - value finally got ahead of it after 2-3 Qtrs great run.

If stocks made a great run after earnings and market is on an uptrend, I would hold on for a little longer.

P.S. agree with your caution on oil sector - it needs a breather
watch for FLC tomorrow - it came in with only in-line with est. - how FLC behaves should tell us if the sector is ripe for a small correction.
