IS there much of a tradition of 'protest' voting in the US? I know Perot had a good deal of support, and on the other wing Nader attracted some especially in 2000: but those I think were more true votes. But beyond any actual Libertarian vote, might Barr attract a number of dissatisfied conservative votes - not because they want him to win, precisely, but because they dislike the current Republican trend and/or the McCain campaign, and want to vote against it without voting for Obama?
