Johnson's ad attacked a philosophy and attitude that could lead to a nuclear war. He did not attack Goldwater as a person. It was a strong ad, but it was a strong push against the ideas that Goldwater and his wing of the party were pushing.

The Nixon,Reagan, and Bush tactic has been to question the character of opponents using racism and lies. They don't present ideas, pro or con, they only destroy the people whatever their views or history and do their best to drive the kind of competent people you see to want, out of politics.
