Obama's political read will trump whatever common sense Volcker will try to inject. Volcker's good, but this is a much shittier deck he's being dealt than in 1979. He supported the last bailout, he knows where the national interest lies. The U.S. is debt-ridden on governmental, corporate and individual levels. It's in the interest of all of the above to pay those clownbux back with script worth as much less as possible. Whatever it takes. Different problem from '79. Different solution.

Volcker won't be "the brake" this time. Of course our creditors/overlords may have something to say about it.

Most assuredly. Volcker is the bailout king! Maybe the original post Bretton Woods bailout king. If Bernanke and Paulsen are Bailout kings, then they are Bailout King III. Greeenspan was II and Volcker is the original.
