If we simply make SS a fair tax and get rid of the income cap on contributions, this mandatory insurance plan is self funding. After the boomers come the busters and then a smaller boom thereafter. Demographics change but SS is a good and solid system for forcing people to save for retirement. It takes into consideration reality instead of what-should-be.

Besides, unless we fix our diet, we aren't adding anything to life expectancy.

If we have nationalized health care, the costs and risks of Medicare could be spread out over a much larger and much younger, healthier population. If people earned a decent wage, they would live healthier lives. If we improve our diet, some chronic illnesses such as diabetes may start to go away.

There are ways to fix the money problem including getting rid of the waste and fraud in health care. We should also really, seriously consider the cost of care in the last few months of life.
