For the same contribution, Social security pays you $1844 per month. A commercial annuity pays $1459.

Don't forget that your social security benefits cover both you and your spouse.

Those figures were for you and your spouse being the same age. If your spouse were 10 years younger, your social security payment is the same, but your commercial annuity payment would be $1,261.

Some commercial annuity companies go into bankruptcy and don't pay claims.

You still to save on your own, but social security vs. private annuity is the difference between having to eat dog food and having to eat dirt.
