They ran from Socialist activity and their kid is embracing it.

Egalitarianism, brotherhood, no class divisions, no one is rich, no one is poor, everyone living happily together.... all those images have a certain appeal, especially to idealistic youngsters. We all know that socialism doesn't work, but people still fall for it. God's kingdom on earth is an archetype that is hard to overcome -- and there has never been a shortage of false Messiahs.

Attended a neat Halloween party last night, given by one of our more liberal friends, and a couple of things jumped out at me.

1. Most of the folks were beer drinking, fishing and hunting types. The bulk of them belonging to a "Beer Brewers Club."

2. Everyone seemed to go out of their way to not talk politics. If the election was brought up at all, which is was a few times by one of the younger fellows, there was complete silence.

3. When the above identified person insisted on bringing up politics, only one person said "it's obvious, we need to kick em out."

Silence!

It just felt like there was a great amount of tension in the room when politics was mentioned, and I don't recall it being that way in past year's parties. In fact most people loved making fun of GWB.

Otherwise it was quite fun, with lots of really great beer since these amateur brew masters are constantly competing against one another to see who can make the best beer.

There was some home made vodka and Jägermeister there too.

;)
