We differ on this. I believe in the general social importance of the safety net and of social security and medicare as important for the general welfare. I've gathered from your posts that you do not. I agree on the importance of the safety net, but I would set it at a lower level than you would. I also think that the safety net comes with a cultural cost which doesnt get enough attention. There is a culture of dependency in parts of this country and it has had a profound negative impact on entire generations of people. It is a balancing act that is virtually impossible to get right. However, incentivising both education and work would underlie any system that I would support. Slacker
