>Z, on ABCNews.com (so you know it isn't another Rush-rant), this column not only calls out the media bias I've been pointing out for years, but also confirms my suspicions that the Internet had a hand in the decline of mainstream media's objectivity

It's an opinion piece with no data at all... it confirms nothing.

It might as well be a "Rush-rant."

>>> Media's Presidential Bias and Decline

Ten

The article reminded me of when I became ashamed to admit I'm a CPA. It is a cleansing process.

Professionals have, above all else, a responsibility to be objective, a precondition to which is independence (financial and otherwise). In the case of CPAs, we were prohibited from taking fees from audit customers that were so large as to potential influence our judgment, for example. For physicians, surgeons don't cut on family members. This is a fundamental principle of professional ethics.

When I was in private practice, I can remember seeing a list that ranked the levels of trust people had in various professions -- and CPA consistently, year after year, held the top spot. It is a far cry from the absolute bottom of the barrel where that trust level now resides -- and should. It takes some soul-searching for an entire profession to admit it is an abject failure.

This cleansing process will, I believe, be undertaken for journalists when this election is over. The profession will realize that it, more than any other thing, is responsible for having elected Obama. Whether they will be able to come together and admit it publicly, and take action to fix the problem, I don't know. The CPAs couldn't and the profession was destroyed by it.

Journalists have the highest responsibility for objectivity of any profession. They were endowed by the Constitution with enhanced rights, specifically because the Founders believed that the important role of watchdog over the Presidency and Congress was more important than the rights of others that would be impeded by a free press. This was a serious question posed in the Federalist Papers, and there was at least some feeling that the negatives associated with a free press might outweigh the positives. Ultimately, they were given freedom solely on the grounds that a free press could serve an an objective observer of the governmental process.

In this election, that objectivity has been out the window. If they cannot self-regulate, the free press must cease to exist as they cannot continue to be subjective in their coverage.

Media's Presidential Bias and Decline

The author complains that the media is biased. One example he provides is how the media during the Israel attack on Lebanon showed many shots of cluster bombs hitting Lebanon but few shots of rockets hitting Israel. As with many of the examples he cites, I don't follow his argument. The Israeli attack on Lebanon was a hundred times more powerful than the Hez. attack on Israel......there was absolutely no comparison at the level of destruction in Lebanon vis-a-vis Israel. Consequently, is it not logical to expect that the media would focus more on the destruction in Lebanon? Like to hear your opinion.

Then he talks about the presidential campaign and joe the plumber. Again, I don't understand from where he's coming. He's upset that joe was treated badly by the press.......is that because they exposed his lies? Because he had 'the courage' to talk to Obama, his lies should have been ignored? I don't get what the criticism is all about.......can you elaborate? TIA.
