It is a cleansing process. Professionals have, above all else, a responsibility to be objective, a precondition to which is independence (financial and otherwise). In the case of CPAs, we were prohibited from taking fees from audit customers that were so large as to potential influence our judgment, for example. For physicians, surgeons don't cut on family members. This is a fundamental principle of professional ethics. When I was in private practice, I can remember seeing a list that ranked the levels of trust people had in various professions -- and CPA consistently, year after year, held the top spot. It is a far cry from the absolute bottom of the barrel where that trust level now resides -- and should. It takes some soul-searching for an entire profession to admit it is an abject failure. This cleansing process will, I believe, be undertaken for journalists when this election is over. The profession will realize that it, more than any other thing, is responsible for having elected Obama. Whether they will be able to come together and admit it publicly, and take action to fix the problem, I don't know. The CPAs couldn't and the profession was destroyed by it. Journalists have the highest responsibility for objectivity of any profession. They were endowed by the Constitution with enhanced rights, specifically because the Founders believed that the important role of watchdog over the Presidency and Congress was more important than the rights of others that would be impeded by a free press. This was a serious question posed in the Federalist Papers, and there was at least some feeling that the negatives associated with a free press might outweigh the positives. Ultimately, they were given freedom solely on the grounds that a free press could serve an an objective observer of the governmental process. In this election, that objectivity has been out the window. If they cannot self-regulate, the free press must cease to exist as they cannot continue to be subjective in their coverage.
