Either Chuck Todd or Charlie Cook said tonight that McCain's staff is hoping to tighten the race nationally under four points then hope for a 270-vote electoral win on election night. No one is talking about doing any better than that. And the odds of getting that far get longer every day.

I got a call from the GOP last week inviting me to go see Palin today. I actually considered it momentarily just to get a sense of her grip on the crowd. But my curiosity wasn't strong enough. And, since I've never been to a candidate rally, I'd have no basis for assessing her performance.
