If I were Obama I wouldn't try to pitch alternative energy as a replacement for the consumer economy. It's not very plausible in the short-term, and frankly, people enjoy the consumer economy and what it offers. It would make more sense as an employment policy. If you can create demand for new alternative energy devices from the home to the car to factories, employment in that sector will take on a momentum of its own and be more sustainable than Hummer factories or mortgage brokers.
