[European ATM Services Interoperability (EASI)]

Pat, I have a ANSI question. Do we know who sits on their T1E1.4 working group?

Also, a fun standards site to peruse:

ispo.cec.be Note the program reps. Here I was introduced to a new acronym: IP/NGI, for Next Generation Internet. Neat huh?

Cheers

Steve

NEWS RELEASE October 20
THE PAN EUROPEAN SUPER HIGHWAY TO BECOME A REALITY THROUGH THE WORK OF A NEW ETSI PROJECT

In a move to accelerate the creation of the Pan European Super Highway, ETSI has established a new Project - the ATM Services Interoperability (EASI) Project - which brings together industry and network operators to work towards full interoperability.

The move follows the G7 ministerial conference, which highlighted the significance of the Global Information Society for the 21st century, and represents a milestone in the creation of a truly Global Information Society where traditional borders between people will be removed.

The EASI Project will set standards for interoperable ATM Pan European and Global Networks and Services and will produce the necessary standards to enable industry to provide common interfaces between different network operators.

The resultant interoperability between different operators' networks will mean high-performance, high-speed broadband services will become commercially available across Europe and beyond.

Through the EASI Project, manufacturers and network operators will work together to deliver seamless service connectivity to all end users. For the end user, it will mean the delays often associated with the Internet will be reduced and the introduction of new types of high speed multimedia services will become a reality. 'Interoperability is necessary world-wide for delivery of the Global Information Society and the ETSI EASI Project will deliver the tools necessary to achieve this goal." Said ETSI Director General, Karl Heinz Rosenbrock

In addition, a wider range of services will become available for the business community, designed to meet specific business needs.

It is in support of these goals that ETSI has joined with a number of partners around the world to collaborate in the development of standards for ATM. ETSI's principal partners in this work are:

the ATM Forum, a global grouping of organizations and companies interested in developing and promoting ATM technology
the Telecommunications Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T), a world-wide body with many years history and widely recognized as the first centre of global expertise in telecommunications
and the ATM Memorandum Of Understanding Group of ETNO, the European consortium of Telecommunications Network Operators which is responsible for the technical framework documentationincluding user and control plane and network management requirements.

It is expected that EASI compliant products and services will be availablefrom January 1999 onwards for network deployment.
