Not clueless at all. At the point that a business is generating that kind of income, most other factors are minor. You are taking a model of a mom and pop, where the income is about what a regular person earns, and trying to apply the same sort of rules to a much larger business.

I testified as an expert witness in a civil trial a few years ago, in which a car dealer sued his bank for canceling a line of credit without proper notice. This very issue was key, in the context of the business valuation.

I was on the stand for a full 16 hours testifying about this precise subject (i.e., compensation of owners and their relatives), after a 10 hour deposition. The bank's attorneys (geniuses from the infamous Rose Law Firm), like you, didn't understand the issue. My client won the full settlement as a result.

I can assure you the subject is much bigger than you are suggesting.
