IMO, Uncle Ted will lose the election. His polling took an immediate hit after the conviction. However, if he somehow recovers and wins then the following backstory comes into play...

After Governor Frank Murkowski appointed his own daughter Lisa to the US Senate in 2002, the citizens of Alaska passed a ballot initiative requiring that such vacancies be filled by special election. The Alaska Legislature then added a questionable provision enabling the governor to make a "temporary" senate appointment, which seems to directly conflict with the ballot initiative.

So if Palin attempts to make a temporary appointment, it will precipitate an immediate legal challenge and constitutional crisis in Alaska.
