There are increases in costs that eat up that second income. That's the point. It takes a higher percentage of income to cover fixed costs than it did a generation ago. Plus, the risks are much higher not to say the debt (public and private) are much higher as well. This does not bode well for the economy. Yes, I think we are economically in much worse shape than we were a generation ago. I think we live with much more risk and reduced opportunity. I also really dislike the debt.
