That's a good summary of the situation. The trick is to listen carefully for when they ring the bell at the bottom to warn that the actual bottom is in and that it's not just another bounce on a downward trajectory.

Sometimes it's good to own oil, sometimes gold, sometimes shares ]if they aren't the ones going broke], sometimes houses, sometimes it's good not to own anything [when Mao and Lenin are confiscating it anyway and shooting the aristocratic owners].

Owning US$ has been good for a few months. Someday it will NOT be a good to own it. When? That's the tricky one.
