It’s been working for the Illinois senator, who is leading most polls. While Obama has continued to portray John McCain as another, more extreme George Bush, John McCain and Sarah Palin have questioned the Democrat’s ties to an assortment of murky characters. So far, the GOP lines of attack have had little impact on voters, who say the economy is their biggest concern this election. “John McCain knows that his economic? theories don’t work, thats why his campaign said that ‘If we keep ?talking about the economy, we’re going to lose.’ That’s why I keep on ?talking about the economy,” he told the 28,000 strong crowd at Obama’s outdoor rally. But, like any good politician, Obama can play defense too. “Because he knows that his economic theories don’t work, he’s been? spending these last few days calling me every name in the book,” he said, referring to the Republican’s dabbling with the word socialist. “I don’t ?know what’s next. By the end of the week, he’ll be accusing me of being? a secret communist because I shared my toys in Kindergarten. I shared my Peanut Butter and Jelly? sandwich,” he said with a laugh. Turning serious, Obama added, “That’s his choice, that’s the kind of? campaign he chose to run. But you have a choice too. The fundamental? question in this election is not ‘Are you better off than you were four? years ago?’ We know the answer to that. The fundamental question is,? ‘Will we be better off four years from now?’” And with that, Obama was back on offense. "When Bill Clinton was president your ?average wages and incomes went up $7,500, under George Bush it? went down $2,000. So if I’ve got economic theories that are ?similar to Bill Clinton’s and he’s got economic theories that are? similar to George Bush’s - you can look and see which one worked and? which one didn’t. The facts are there for everybody to see. John McCain? wants to give more to billionaires, more to corporations that ship jobs ?overseas, more to the same people whose greed and irresponsibility got ?us into this crisis in the first place. We’re here because we know they? shouldn’t get away with it anymore."
