I believe that we actually cast our votes for the
"elector for" the major party nominees ..

It's usually a local minor party official ..

That person then meets in January to officially vote
with the other electors in accordance with the popular
vote, though they aren't legally bound to do so ..

The number of electors in each state is equivalent to the
total number of congressional seats both house and senate ..
