Dear Mr. Chen, >>>There is no man on this earth with even a little background in CS who can endorse the 4/8/16/32/.. Intel architecture as the way of their life in computing! Every sober-minded man would only accept the reality of Intel computing as a sad legacy disaster. Even Intel itself started to realize that and surrendered to Hewlett-Packard computing expertise. Even the main criminal in this situation - Microsoft - has already escaped this legacy obsession and provides platform-independent code for several processor architectures. <<< I'm sorry to butt in like this in a middle of complex discussion, but I don't think you really get the big picture. Intel, Microsoft, and for my generation, IBM are the clear winners. They are the movers and shakers. They don't complain and they don't have to explain. They let the bottom line speak for itself. For years I complained about the inferior line of products that IBM came up with. It was never very innovative and never clearly the best. Someone else alway did it better whether it is Digital (minis), Wang (wp), Software AG (DBMS), et al. But where are these other guys now. The point is, each of us as individuals, are quite helpless in making a big difference in the way you suggest. However, if we handle life properly, we can make a significant difference in some small way - or wait quietly (and not making a fool of ourselves) and prepare for that time when can get on a larger platform, and make the big play. Of course, if we really don't have confidence in ourselves, and think of ourselves as losers that will never get the chance to do anything significant, we will continue in our losing behavior.
