Then that assumes they knew back in 2001 the Dems would win in 2008. Rove is clever but last time I checked, he wasn't clairvoyant. I think the deficits are a factor of greed=tax cuts, 2 wars, prolific spending, and Bush's people not knowing how to manage a budget.

There is one thing that not many people talk about that I am convinced is true wrt the deficit and budgets.

The 90s boom was largely centered on technology and the coasts. People in the red states didn't see the boom so much. I don't think Bush ever really understood what drove the 90s boom, or that it was an elusive kind of thing. I think he and his cronies entered office in 2001 thinking that surpluses were going to go on forever. Therefore why not spend the money, it didn't matter. The Bush econ team at the time was completely clueless when all the jobs went away in 2002. You had the labor secretary on CNBC predicting 300K jobs were going to be created in a month, and the numbers came out and it was a 100K loss. They really had no idea what was going on. By the time they figured out the surplus was a few year deal, and the money was no longer free flowing it was too late and they had already started all the wars and pork programs.

And I think they really did plan on owning this country for at least decades to come, if not forever... so, no, they didn't plan problems. they figured they'd sweep thru Iraq, as they said they would. then sweep thru the rest of the ME then move on to the 'stans in central asia and so on. those darn pesky iraqis messed up their plans for world domination and lots of money (while americans at large grew poorer and poorer) got screwed (tho most of them still have made bundles off of the 'adventure').

One reason I've held my breath so long is that the plan was, as stated openly, to take over this country for the far right for the forseeable future and... it might just turn out to be the polar oppisite. the irony is just so rich. but I am almost ready to breath again.

and kudos to Americans for coming to the fore yet again. We are daym good in a crisis.

Mindmeld:>>
Well, forgive me for thinking the Republicans are machiavellian Rovians. :) But remember, the budget is what they propose and Congress signs off on and these Reps have been running the deficits up wildly. You think that's merely incompetence? I think it is deliberate to make it difficult for the Dems to fix it.<<

koan: I think there is a truth to what mindmeld says.

Two things:

1) if they spend all the money on their military industrial comlex friends, the rich and corporations, the dmes have less to spend on their social programs. Which the rich hate and the "low information voters do not understand they are voting against themselves.".

2) If the neo cons make public programs work, they show they do work, and that goes agaisnt their philosophy of let the private sector run everything.

No, I don't think they planned the last 8 years. But I absolutely do think they knew how this thing was going 1-2 years ago and resolved to run up the deficit as much as possible to make it worse for the Dem controlled Congress in order to blame them. Then when Obama got popular, they hit the accelerator on those plans.
