I think there are a lot of people who have already cared about the inflation in the US, but they have virtually no voice in a gov't controlled by corporations. Everybody who's retired and on SS only, or otherwise a small, fixed income, has seen their buying power diminish year by year for quite some time. But those aren't the beloved "owners" of the republic and so do not have the means to buy an audience or legislation.

There has been no hyperinflation in America since the Revolutionary War except in the Confederacy. There were plenty of panics and depressions prior to World War II.

To most Americans, economic disaster is still equated with recession or depression, despite the at times rather severe inflation of 1970-1985.

There IS a huge emotional attachment. The inflation period preceded a lot of events that split up of families, that met for the first time in 1989 when the wall came down. All Germans know somebody who was affected.

Did you know that almost all houses in Germany have cellars? It was a requirement for many, many years. Guess why.

Did you know that German refugees from the east had to share apartments with other families for many years after the war, because of destruction and deportation.

Did you know that Germans are still faced with discrimination in other countries because of WW2?

The Germans still have American soldiers on their soil, which is frequently mentioned in the media.

The Germans don't want this to repeat, and if they see any sign that we're heading the same direction, they get scared. Me, too. I would show up for a demonstration, too, being the first time in my life.
