I'm pretty sure that's exactly what's happening right now --- after two deficit-raising, global-power-losing, economy-hollowing-out terms from Dubbya, SERIOUS 'voter remorse' has SET IN.

(No need to speculate about what might happen with voter attitudes in the future, when we are dealing with what really is happening right now.)
