Conservative Group Files Ethics Complaint Against Obama
A leading conservative group filed a Senate Ethics Committee complaint Thursday against Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama , saying the Illinois senator accepted and failed to properly disclose “gifts” from Chicago land deals, a charge that implicitly invokes this week’s federal conviction of Sen. Ted Stevens for filing misleading personal disclosure forms.

But the ethics panel, which does not discuss its deliberations publicly, is under no obligation to look into the matter and certainly will not act before Tuesday’s election, which the filing is clearly intended to influence.

The complaint, submitted by the American Conservative Union, alleges that Obama received and failed to report gifts from Antoin “Tony” Rezko, a Chicago developer and onetime Obama political benefactor who has since been convicted of federal fraud and money-laundering crimes, in a pair of land deals involving adjacent properties purchased by Obama and Rezko’s wife, Rita Rezko.

The campaign of Obama’s Republican rival for the presidency, Arizona Sen. John McCain , has increasingly sought to make the land deals and Obama’s relationship with Rezko a line of attack as the election draws near.
