You keep going off the deep end but you won't give specifics. So make a case for shrinking government in favor of the private sector. Bush has done that for the war in Iraq which is about 1/2 private. How has that worked so far? It's a hugely expensive mess with the private portion of the war being much MORE EXPENSIVE than the public portion. "Society would march along just fine if government spending and taxes had never exceeded half or even a quarter of what they are now." Show the numbers. Show the detail. SS is a self funding program so getting rid of that is a wash. Besides, look at the carnage of 401K plans and private pensions. What are the consequences? Do you want to get rid of Medicare, Medicaid....what major programs do you want to get rid of? What are the consequences? What are the costs? I never said anything about a program that increases the price of milk. I don't like the farm supports that benefit large, industrialized farms. They are bad for our health and increase the cost of health care. That is your strawman. Do you think society would collapse without the corporate welfare of this bail out? I don't know. I am happy to see firms collapse if they are incompetent. I was not for the bailout and, even after it passed, was not for the purchase of lousy debt. I do not know if society would have collapsed or still may collapse anyway...I think the financial fiasco is part real and part extortion. I have never justified spending over $5 T. You keep making up arguments, you get upset about your own made up arguments and then you blame me for your made up arguments. I am simply telling you that you have choices. Since you choose to live in this society you get to pay some taxes. I'd like to see taxation reduced as well. I'm happy to, for example, get rid of all the petty criminal convictions over petty drugs and shut down many prisons. That would save us a bundle. ----------- We could always call in the loan from AIG. They may still come unglued....hard to tell. Why would having people making over $104K or thereabouts paying out their fair share of SS taxes be damaging? The same argument will be made for getting rid of milk subsidies....it's always the same argument for those losing their special favors. ------------ So you are against all aspects of the bailout? That would include Fannie/Freddie, BS, AIG, Banks, MMFs, increases in FDIC insurance and probably now other insurance companies. What do you think would have been the consequences of the federal government doing nothing? Ditto all the other governments who stepped in with some $2.5 T (or more, who knows) supposedly to avert a catastrophic meltdown? What if the financial system needs more...are you against that as well? Are you against the continuing occupation in Iraq at a cost of $10-12b/month? What else do you want to shut down that would make a big enough impact on government spending (federal, state and local) to be worthwhile?
