LOL, yep, we had one of those too. Back in the single telephone per home days, it always sat on a small table in the hallway. Probably because that was about the middle of the house. I still remember our number was Hazeltine 246J.

Until recently (about 18 years ago), everyone on Catalina Island, off the coast of Southern California, had the bakelite phones. All calls went through a switchboard. Amazingly, there was resistance to taking out the switchboard and giving people their own phones. There was one number to call for the island and you asked for people by name, not extension.
