I was speaking of government benefits, in general. Being on the receiving end is a good deal, particularly as opposed to being on the paying end. With regard to SS, you have some of each end. The ends seem to balance out favorably towards the lowest earners, at least. And there's always the chance that each of us could end up one of the lowest earners just as there's a chance that we may not live long enough to collect anything. That's the insurance aspect of it.

Great point.

Perhaps you can divine what the "larger good" that John speaks of is. He doesn't seem to want/be able to tell me.

No one seems to have an answer to the "why medical" question, either. I've asked it many times.
