I could divine "good" Good for the country as an entity (which is my take on the term, "greater good") as opposed to the sum of the individual good? Mme makes the point on occasion that there's an overall good in keeping the rabble from rising up and making trouble. I suppose that would count as a greater good. I had forgotten about that when I posted to John. I suppose, too, there's the respect of Europe, their thinking us less brutish than expected. But I can't come up with anything else. without considering the costs or problems or perverse incentives and unintended consequences Yes, you'd have to take any greater goods and net them out. The two potential candidates I came up with may not net out on the plus side.
