I know exactly why. It was because for five years, they were totally convinced that they had the whole "permanent Republican majority" thing down, and never, ever expected that not only would they lose both houses and the Presidency, but they'd lose both in landslides within three years' time and their hero Bush would go down as one of the worst Presidents of all time. I understand the facts but I don't get why its so surprising to them. People have been complaining for years about the bad things happening in this country. Did they think it was idle chatter? All the screwups that have come down the pike....like Iraq, New Orleans, the deficit, etc........did they think they were normal? Its a mystery to me why they are surprised by the fallout.
