Well, perzactly.

Whack does mean hit, after all. Wacky means zany or crazy.

When one is talking about a person who doesn't make sense when she talks, such as Sarah Palin, as a random example, there doesn't seem to be any sense in saying she's a "whack job." It's not as if she's out to kill somebody.

I do realize that I'm fighting a losing battle on this.
