. They have a monarch, for heaven's sake.

Gosh Lane3 I'm not sure what you are arguing here. You want to think of the country as a Monachy with a tribal following I guess. Call it whatever you like. My argument - in case you forgot - is that the government works for their people. If you feel that this is because the people are "tribal" and are ruled by a "monarchy" well fine, but what this has to do with my original comments remains a mystery.

Are the people .... relatively cohesive, family-based unit .....sure. Does that mean they are not "scalable"? I sure never said they were and would add that it has absolutely nothing to do with my point. If you are stuck on the size of the country, well you will just have to be stuck there I guess. Better if you would stop the circuitous arguments and try to keep attention on the original idea - that government can work for the people. I used the arguments during discussion of "socialism" here in this country and intentionally used my eletrical provider as an example. The Utility is owned at the local level by me and my neighbors in a socialistic public utility district. Some of the infrastructure is more grand in scale but is still government owned. And on the macro scale (since you seem to be stuck on the size of Norway) our power comes from the Bonneville Power Administration - a huge socialistic style government owned and run power producer - for the people. Many of the users of this power are as diverse as any in this country, so the scalability that you suggest for the reason you seem to think important is just not applicable. It's an idea, a philosophy and to get hung up on tribes or monarchs only clouds the issue. The idea as I see it is applicable to any government, any size or any diversity. If you listen closely to Obama, he is saying much the same thing.
