But considering that they face more risk when starting their own companies, and not less, that shouldn't be a factor that drives their compensation packages up. It should be the opposite.

They can hardly take a bargaining position that says, "Well, I could start my own company and make less, with less certainty that I'll make it, so you need to pony up."
