There were those who didn't want government stringing up power lines. They lost. Power lines accomplished exactly what we know they accomplished for rural areas that had been slow to be served by the free market, unlike cities. From Wikipedia: "Before 1936, a small but growing number of farms installed small wind-electric plants. These generally used a 40V DC generator to charge batteries in the barn or the basement of the farmhouse.
