Synopsys gains 6% on strong results

Synopsys shares added 6 percent in early Wednesday trading after the company said it earned 42 cents per share, 1 cent ahead of expectations, on revenue of $133 million. Last week, the company, which makes software for chipmakers, acquired rival Viewlogic Systems in a deal that Goldman, Sachs expects to be accretive to earnings. Analyst Laura Conigliaro added she expected Synopsys to expand operating margins to up to 25 percent, from the current 22 percent level. The better-than-expected results at Synopsys follow strong quarterly reports from rival Cadence Design Systems and Avant!. The stock rose 2 7/16 to 41 15/16.
