[chat-competiting technologies] Hi Jim, As you know, I'm not a 'techie' so please correct any misunderstandings that follow. Stepping back from my seemingly myopic daily look at the 'data transmission' field I notice a few things. In the almost 2 years that I have been anxiously awaiting commercial deployment of ADSL and all that goes along with it, ie: video on demand, etc., I have been hearing that cable just can't really compete for various reasons. What has been cited was capital needs to re-wire with fiber and inability to offer two way avenues. I have to assume that MSFT is aware of all the options in the delivery field and the new technologies that are coming down the 'pike'. They are participants in the GTE trial with 1000 lines in WA. So they know first hand what ADSL can be capable of providing. I am becoming more and more concerned with competing technologies or delivery systems. Besides cable, there is LMDS and the upcoming government auctions in December. It's like I've been 'slapped up-side the head'. With a deeper look and understanding of the field than I can muster, MSFT has invested $1 billion in one cable venture and is looking into another $ 1 billion deal. They bought WebTV. Any comments as to why they or some other forward thinking company hasn't made strong financial commitments to ADSL? I have to assume that WSTL was not the only suitor for AMTX yet when all the dust cleared, there wasn't a bidding war ie: MCI. A recent poster(Mark Mooney) in the BC Tel area tells a story that may be repeated throughout the market, about how he is going with cable because ADSL isn't offered. Right in my backyard, a company is offering LMDS service which includes cable, commercial TV, high speed internet connect and eventually, telephony over a proven wireless technology. Would appreciate any comment.. BTW, I still want my DMT .. Regards. Ed.

And despite a semester of calculus 30 years ago I didn't understand a thing! I also didn't notice any VDSL issues, only HDSL and ADSL. Is T1E1.4 addressing VDSL protocol or is that another committee? I can understand why MOT would want to sabotage the standards adoption. They failed at narrowband modems and have been very deceptive with CopperGold. But, I doubt MOT will be a cog in the ADSL juggernaught. Steve
