>>>if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them<<<

Poor Aubrey. So right but so early and with so much overcommitment.

My coal stocks have been pulverized (pun intended). The bottom line is that 50% plus coal generation isn't going anywhere. There will be some pricing pressure on raw coal, but I think that most of the costs will be passed on to J6P. He will howl.

I think that when the day come, the ute managers will go into the oval office, explain the costs and tell the prez that it isn't going to happen.

The last few conferences I have attended stated baldly that CO2 has been pushed to the far back burner. I think that the most liberal member of congress can look at the cost in the middle of this downturn and put two and two together. Still, the Green Religion as a whole didn't study economics, and Obama's rhetoric sells well.

Growth in coal generation will be tough. But that has been true for the last four years at least. Nobody should b3e surprised. Throw in the lack of financing from the credit crunch, and there will be few new plants of any kind constructed.

I do see growth in coal profits. It will be on the price side due to lack of supply maintenance. Why bother adding productive capacity when the Prez has a bull's eye painted on your forehead. Of course in three years when the price of coal has doubled, the Senate led by Ron Wyden will be skewering coal for intentionally withholding production.

Peabody has the Australian mines which ship to China. China doesn't care what Obama says or does.
